A Short Film and The Oscars-- March 5th, 7pm

The End of Earl Street (Patricia Connolly, 24 minutes, documentary)

THE END OF EARL STREET, A Memoir of Love, Loss & Municipality began with the exploration of the notion that a city constructs its own history by what it chooses to preserve, in this instance, a derelict and marvellous piece of waterfront property.
The film then attempts a construction of memory and elegy through the choices made as to what images and sounds to preserve in the cinematic text. At the core of this narrative within a narrative, is my own very personal tribute to a specific site: one that began as the site of loss and evolved into a place of healing.

This is juxtaposed with an investigation of the more public and political relationships that others have with this same place. In so doing, it tries to look at how we may arrive at our relationship to a given place.

Finally, the film is 'bracketed' by the notion of journey: the opening of the film sees my arrival, while the end of the film is only a memory of having been there. I have become a transient in my own film.

"This is what time actually does: it reduces us to ruins. I mean, we are transitory and that's what is so interesting about Block D, it doesn't shield from us the fact that we are not going to be here forever. It in fact dramatizes that. It's all about our passage."-- Ian McKay

TFC Short Film Competition- April 2nd

We'll give you the topic, you give us your film! Films can be no longer than 5 minutes and no shorter than 30seconds. It's preferable that you work with someone in the Collective that you haven't before-- points given for new crews. Topic to be given out at the April 2nd screening, and the due date is April 15th-- you have two weeks to complete your film. 1st place gets two $50 gift certificates to Henry's (see where your donation money goes?), and a dinner for two at Lula Lounge (thanks Jose and Shawn!) plus whatever else we feel like putting in the bag. In other words, if you're interested in being a part of the competition, you MUST be at the April 2nd screening. Consider this fair warning. Details to follow.
