From the Director's Label Series DVD, it's a 75-minute look inside the mind of a modern genius who, as Palm Pictures web site states, has "never lost the sense of wonder and inventiveness that children display when their minds are allowed to flourish in a creative environment".

Michel Gondry is the director of the films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,
Human Nature and most recently, The Science of Sleep.

Don't miss this entertaining look into the wonderland of director Michel Gondry's childlike imagination. Michel Gondry on inspiration.

Gondry has also directed dozens of the most imaginative videos ever seen, for
artists like Bjork, the White Stripes, the Chemical Brothers, Kylie Minogue, Foo
Fighters etc.

"When I start a video I always try to go in an area that I feel unsafe." At the core of this narrative within a narrative, is my own very personal tribute to a specific site: one that began as the site of loss and evolved into a place of healing.

This is juxtaposed with an investigation of the more public and political relationships that others have with this same place. In so doing, it tries to look at how we may arrive at our relationship to a given place.

Finally, the film is 'bracketed' by the notion of journey: the opening of the film sees my arrival, while the end of the film is only a memory of having been there. I have become a transient in my own film.

"This is what time actually does: it reduces us to ruins. I mean, we are transitory and that's what is so interesting about Block D, it doesn't shield from us the fact that we are not going to be here forever. It in fact dramatizes that. It's all about our passage."-- Ian McKay

then at 8pm:

Watch the Oscars on the big screen with complimentary popcorn!
Get dressed up if you want, and do the full on Oscar deal. She's also worked for places like the HAROLD GREENBERG FUND.

SCREENING: December 4, 2005 at 7pm

The Film Collective presents: Two Toronto documentaries introduced by the filmmakers including:

Let Them Stay
Voices of U.S. War Resisters in Canada

*A Special Sneak Preview Exclusive to TFC*

A film by Alex Lisman (Colour and B&W / 28 minutes / 2005 / Canada)

Thousands of young Americans have been leaving the U.S. military, refusing to participate in the illegal war and occupation of Iraq. Facing imprisonment and persecution, a small but growing number are coming to Canada, in the same way that thousands of Vietnam War resisters did years ago. To stay, this generation of war resisters needs the same kind of provision that the government of Pierre Elliott Trudeau allowed for opponents of the Vietnam War.

"Let Them Stay" features exclusive one-on-one interviews with the soldiers, documenting their life-changing experiences in Iraq and the hidden realities of U.S. military recruitment and warfare. It also documents the War Resisters Support Campaign,
a pan-Canadian coalition of labour, faith, and peace groups, Vietnam War resisters, and individuals who are working with these war resisters to put pressure on the current federal government to let them stay.

The world premiere of Let Them Stay will take place on December 10 at UofT and will include a short presentation by one of the war resisters on the status of their case and the campaign. More details to follow.

Let Them Stay will be followed by:

Give Me a Roadmap
A film about coming of age, late

A film by Tullia Marcolongo
Written by: Leanne Dufault, Tullia Marcolongo, and Melissa Ray
Produced by: Quadricycle Films

(Colour / 25 minutes / 2005 / Canada)

What do you do when the goalposts keep moving? In a society that idealizes youth, freedom and success, twenty-nine year-olds talk about the challenges of growing up fast but coming of age late. They reflect on living in different circumstances than previous generations, on the contradictions between meeting their personal expectations and those of others, on being financially insecure but having an overwhelming array of choices... And finding meaning at the brink of thirty.

Discussion Group/ Online Forum:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/collectivenews/

The discussion group/ online forum is a way of getting up to the minute information about Collective events (wonder why you haven't heard from me in a month?). Please remember to think up an idea for a film if you don't already have one. My suggestion is to make it 10 minutes AT MOST if you're just starting out (5mins ideally). Think about how realistic the film will be to make. For example, if you've imagined a spactacular and epic crane shot, please remember that this is incredibly expensive.

If you're interested in screenings, please think up a few movies you'd like to see or some movies you'd recommend. If you're interested in workshops (screenings plus directed discussion), then think up a topic and pitch it.

Here are a few ideas for films if you're stuck:

1. A film about a situation- no dialogue, only body language and mise en scene.
2. A documentary on random acts of kindness in Toronto (or wherever you are)
3. A documentary on an artist/ friend
4. A mockumentary on a professional/ person you know
5. Short film animation (stop and go, 3d, 2d, stick figures—whatever)
6. Short film about sailing
7. Short film about a relationship
8. A film about perspective: the world is ending—four people’s perspectives
9. Mock travel video about your favourite city
10. Web video: choose your own adventure
11. Web video: murder mystery
12. Doing a scene from a film/ tv show you like—maybe your own version (eg. A scene from Memento, or the musical Buffy episode)

Remember, all you need is a camera and an idea.

See you Sunday!
